Is Illegal Street Racing a Growing Problem?
On February 1st, two cars were apparently street racing close to the Denver International Airport. One lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic, causing a crash that killed one person and injured three more. In 2024, almost 2,000 complaints were made to local police agencies and the Colorado State Patrol about street racing. Although it is illegal, the problem seems to be growing.
If you see street racing taking place, we join the Colorado State Patrol in urging you to report it online or by dialing Star CSP (*277). If you are injured in an accident caused by a street racer, whether in a direct collision or a miss-and-run, our dedicated Denver, CO car accident lawyers can help you collect the compensation you deserve.
What Is Colorado Law Enforcement Doing About the Street Racing Problem?
The Street Racing Working Group includes various police departments, sheriff’s offices, and District Attorneys. This group hosts a website where citizens can anonymously report street racing, and it received 1,533 complaints in 2023. That number rose by over 25 percent in 2024 and resulted in 360 citations, 506 traffic contacts, 11 impounded vehicles, and 16 arrests. SRWG also recovered stolen vehicles and seized illegal weapons.
Because street racers often have cars with powerful engines, law enforcement cannot always stop them. Despite the challenges, officers intend to ramp up their efforts to bring a stop to these traffic crimes.
If the Street Racer Who Caused My Accident Flees, Can I Still File a Claim?
Whether you are the victim of a street racing hit-and-run or miss-and-run, you probably sustained injuries in your crash. Your car likely needs to be repaired or replaced. These and other accident-related expenses, along with compensation for the ways your accident has affected your life, could be available through an insurance claim. If the fleeing driver is identified, you can file a claim against him. However, if the at-fault party is not found, you have limited options.
Hopefully, you have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on your own auto insurance policy. Your coverage should provide benefits up to your policy limits. Unfortunately, even though you would be dealing with your own insurer, you will probably receive a low settlement offer because no insurance company wants to pay claims.
Complicated situations like these require an experienced lawyer. We may be able to assist in finding the driver if he fled the accident scene. Regardless of whose insurance your claim is against, we will fight the company to help you obtain the highest available amount of compensation.
