Speeding Kills
Many of us will admit to exceeding the speed limit at least once or twice in our lives. Maybe while running a little late to work, or maybe rushing to be on time for an engagement that was important to us. And the vast majority of the time, nothing catastrophic happens when we speed.
But unfortunately, for hundreds of United States citizens every day who speed for one reason or another, the catastrophic does happen. In fact, driving too fast for road conditions, or exceeding the posted speed limit, is one of the greatest contributing factors in motor vehicle crashes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, in 2019 alone 9,478 fatalities, representing 26% of all traffic crash fatalities that year, were caused by accidents in which excessive speed was a factor.
That year there were 8,544 fatal automobile collisions that were caused by speeding drivers, and these numbers are tragic, when you consider that speeding should be a fairly easy behavior to stop.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
May is National Motorcycle Awareness Month, and now that we're in the middle of spring with longer days and warmer weather, we can all expect to see more motorcyclists on the road.
And this motorcycle season is somewhat different, because motorcycle sales dramatically increased throughout the year of 2020, as people longing to get out into the open air searched for new ways to do it.
This increase in interest in motorcycles, presumably driven by frustrations stemming from months in quarantine due to the pandemic, means that not only will there be more motorcyclists on the road, a large number of them will be new riders, so it's important that we learn to see motorcyclists so that we can all do our part to avoid a tragic accident.
Be Prepared and Ride Defensively
Whether you're a seasoned motorcycle veteran or fairly new to riding, participating in a rider training course is always a good idea. You must be properly licensed with a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license. And before you take your bike for the first spin of the season, perform a tune-up and safety inspection of the lights, tires, and mechanical systems.

Florida Teen Dies After Taser Shock
A Florida teenager has died after being shocked with a taser by Florida law enforcement when they were trying to arrest him for graffiti offenses. Israel Hernandez, 18, was caught spray painting a building in Miami beach on August 6th by officers and ran when police tried to arrest him. He was tasered after ignoring officers demands to stop running during the foot chase. After being taken into custody the teenager started showing signs of distress and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later. The coroner's report is still pending and the cause of death is unknown at this time, but the boys family has stated that he didn't have any health problems that could have been related to his death.
According to human rights organization, Amnesty International, from 2001 to 2013, approximately 500 people have died from tasers, Florida has the second highest death rate in the United States due to the use of these "Stun Guns." Because tasers are not firearms they do not fall under any regulations from the Bureau of of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The journal Circulation released a study in which Dr. Douglas Zipes stated that "the shock from a taser could induce sudden cardiac arrest."
